What Is an Aortic Aneurysm?

An aortic aneurysm is a bulge or balloon in the wall of the aorta, the main artery that runs from your heart to all organs in your body. If the aneurysm gets too big, it stretches the wall of the aorta. This stretching can cause the aorta to rupture or to dissect – meaning that – layers of the artery wall split and blood can leak between them. Aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment.

Many aneurysms don’t cause any symptoms. Doctors may find them by accident while doing an imaging test for another reason. Ideally, an aortic aneurysm can be treated before it gets large enough to be dangerous. There are two main kinds of aortic aneurysms:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm: The aneurysm is in the lower part of your aorta, in the stomach area. These aneurysms are the more common type.
  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm: The aneurysm is in the upper part of your aorta, in the chest area.

How We Treat Aortic Aneurysm at Memorial

Repairing aortic aneurysms is complex. Memorial has an extensive program for aortic aneurysms to serve South Florida. We offer:

  • Dedicated aortic aneurysm center: We are the most comprehensive center in South Florida, treating all types of aortic aneurysms, including complex ruptures and dissections. Our team includes specialists in cardiac surgery and vascular surgery. Patients who come to Memorial with an aortic aneurysm will see a doctor with advanced experience in treating that condition.
  • Several ways to repair aneurysms: If an aneurysm is large or causing symptoms, we can repair it with surgery or with a less-invasive endovascular procedure. The treatment depends on the aneurysm’s location. We also perform hybrid procedures, which combine surgical and endovascular techniques. Hybrid procedures offer quicker recovery than traditional surgery.
  • Experienced team that works together: Our heart and vascular specialists collaborate and coordinate to determine the most appropriate treatment for each patient. Because we have experience treating so many types of aneurysms, our team has few limits in what we can do.
  • Marfan syndrome specialization: Marfan syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that is linked to a higher risk for aortic aneurysm. Memorial has a dedicated program for diagnosing and treating Marfan.
