Your cardiac (heart) and pulmonary (lung) rehabilitation journey is unique to you. At Memorial Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, our experts meet you on that journey by guiding you toward renewed strength, stamina, and confidence through a holistic approach that considers your physical, mental and emotional well-being. We support you and your family as you work to return to a full and active lifestyle.

What is Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Our rehabilitation team includes experienced cardiovascular (heart and vascular) and pulmonary (lung) rehabilitation specialists. We focus on helping you recover from a heart or lung condition or surgery. While we believe exercise therapy is an important part of the rehabilitation journey, it's equally important to adopt a comprehensive approach to a healthy lifestyle in order to reduce your risk of future heart and lung disease. Our program includes:

  • Patient- and family-centered goal setting
  • Heart or lung disease management education
  • Home exercise education
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Risk factor modification
  • Stress management
  • Tobacco cessation

Cardiac Rehabilitation

American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation certification seal

We design your cardiac rehabilitation journey to strengthen your heart and return you to a fully active, healthy lifestyle. Our three-phase plan is tailored to guide you on this journey.

Our program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) – a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the mission of reducing morbidity, mortality and disability from cardiovascular and pulmonary disease through education, prevention, rehabilitation, research and disease management.

Phase I Cardiac Rehabilitation

This phase begins in the hospital (inpatient) after your cardiac event or procedure. A clinical exercise physiologist from our Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program will visit you in your room and provide information about the rehabilitation process to help you establish goals. Depending on your condition and abilities, you may start doing exercises in the hospital. The inpatient cardiac rehabilitation team will help you facilitate your transition to outpatient cardiac rehabilitation.

Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation

When you leave the hospital, you’ll be directed to our outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program offered at two locations – Hollywood and Pembroke Pines – which will typically last for three months. Our team of specialists will help guide, supervise, and support your rehabilitation progress towards achieving your goals for an active, healthy lifestyle. Exercise sessions are EKG-monitored and are in small group settings. Our team creates an individualized treatment plan unique to your abilities and goals. Heart disease management education, nutrition counseling, and stress management classes are provided.

Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation

We call this phase of your rehabilitation journey the Resolution Program. After completing outpatient cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation, you can choose to continue in this medically supervised exercise program – which also lasts for up to three months – that is designed to help continue your active lifestyle and to transition you to independent home exercise or gym routine. seniors using seated bikes in gym.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

When you have a respiratory condition, exercise therapy is key to improving your lung function and maintaining your overall health. But if breathing difficulty makes an active lifestyle challenging, our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program may be right for you. Our expert team provides a personalized exercise and education plan based on your abilities, lung function and goals. Throughout the process, we guide, supervise, and support your progress towards achieving your goals for an active, healthy lifestyle.

Prevention

A heart-healthy lifestyle is your best defense against heart disease. So, what does a heart-healthy lifestyle look like?

Eat a healthy diet.
Center your meals around vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, plant-based proteins, lean animal proteins and fish.

Watch your weight.
Check your body mass index (BMI) online or talk to your doctor about a healthy weight for you.

Live tobacco-free.
Don’t smoke, vape or use tobacco products. Also, avoid secondhand smoke.

Be physically active.
If you are at risk for or have chronic heart or lung conditions, suffer from joint discomfort, low energy or reduced abilities, consider attending our medically supervised exercise program. This is a great way to help you develop an exercise routine and lifestyle habits that support your goal of a healthier and active life.

Practice stress management.
Incorporate techniques to improve how you cope with adversity, like mindfulness, meditation, yoga, stretching, deep breathing, spending time in nature, improving your personal relationships, or finding a hobby.
