Aquablation Therapy

Minimally invasive waterjet therapy to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Whether you’ve just started your care journey, want a second opinion or are seeking an alternative minimally invasive treatment, we know choosing a treatment option for your enlarged prostate can be overwhelming, as it often forces men to compromise. This could mean choosing a treatment that only provides limited relief, that may have a longer recovery time, or that may even cause issues such as sexual dysfunction.

Aquablation therapy, or waterjet ablation therapy, is an alternative procedure used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) also known as an enlarged prostate, that has been proven to minimize such complications.

What is Aquablation Therapy

AquaBeam BioRobotic SystemAquablation therapy is the first and only image-guided, heat-free, robotic therapy that provides a minimally invasive alternative to treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Surgical interventions can cause complications that lead to loss of continence, ejaculatory dysfunction and erectile dysfunction, whereas water ablation therapy is proven to lower risks typically associated with other surgical options.

The heat-free waterjet ablation delivers effective, safe and durable outcomes that are independent of prostate size or shape. In clinical studies, most men who received aquablation therapy preserved continence, erections, and ejaculation.

What To Expect During Aquablation Procedure at Memorial

An alternative to traditional surgical treatments, aquablation therapy uses a high-velocity waterjet to remove enlarged prostatic tissue, delivering lasting results with a low risk of complications.

  • The procedure combines a camera (cystoscope) with ultrasound imaging, so your surgeon sees your entire prostate in real time, allowing for improved planning and precision of treatment.
  • Patients may be required to stay in the hospital overnight for monitoring.

There are two key steps in the procedure:

  1. Surgical mapping: Mapping enables surgeons to create a guide for the robot to identify what tissue to remove. This way your surgeon only resects the affected tissue and can attempt to preserve ejaculatory function and continence.
An ultrasound probe is inserted through the rectum to allow for mapping of the prostate. In addition, a camera is also inserted into the urethra to directly visualize the prostate and bladder.
  2. Removing the prostate tissue: Once mapping is complete the surgeon uses the robotic- controlled waterjet to remove the prostate tissue with precision

Benefits of Aquablation Therapy

One of the biggest benefits is real time imaging. The resulting precision of treatment reduces complications such as loss of continence, ejaculatory dysfunction and erectile dysfunction. Other benefits include:

  • Quick recovery
  • Symptoms of enlarged prostate subside within a few weeks
  • Short procedure time
  • No longer need BPH medication
  • The procedure can be repeated
  • Can be used with other prostate treatments

FAQs

Do I have to stay in the hospital?
Aquablation therapy is an outpatient procedure performed in the hospital that requires anesthesia. Depending on the size of your prostate and other patient-specific factors, you may be required to stay overnight for observation. Your surgeon will discuss this with you at your initial visit.
What is the recovery time?
Most symptoms typically resolve within a few weeks after aquablation therapy, though individual results may vary. Talk to your doctor about what to expect following your procedure.
What's the difference between Aquablation therapy vs other forms of treatment?

Traditional treatments, such as ‘transurethral resection of the prostate’ (TURP) and ‘photovaporization of the prostate’ (PVP) use different types of energy like extreme heat or laser technology to target and treat specific areas. The goal of these therapies is to use extreme temperatures to resect or destroy benign tissue.

Aquablation therapy is used for treatment of a non-cancerous condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does not use a heat component and thus reduces the chance of associated complications.

Are there side effects with aquablation therapy?

There are side effects related to any surgery, such as the effect of anesthesia, which is why your doctor will ask a series of questions and may perform tests to determine the best treatment option for your condition. With aquablation most side effects are mild and include:

  • Bleeding
  • Strain while urinating
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Decrease in semen during ejaculation
  • Pain during urination for two to four weeks
