FIT: Family in Training Program
At Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, our FIT: Family in Training program enables you to safely be part of your family member’s care team.
Interested family members or caregivers chosen to participate learn how to assist patients with activities that nursing, or therapy staff members might normally help with. This partnership can increase patient safety by reducing falls or other injuries, and help family members and caregivers feel more confident and comfortable.
Training is provided in 5 key areas:
- Bed/chair transfers
- Walking
- Toileting
- Toilet transfers
- Wheelchair management
FIT Band Trained
An orange silicone wristband that reads “FIT: Family in Training” signifies training is complete and provides a visible sign to hospital staff.
Ongoing Training
To address changes in assistance needs and therapy equipment, training continues as patients make progress and gain independence, including training to assist patients once they return home.
Keeping Patients Safe
Since its inception, the FIT program has helped to decrease family-related falls by more than 50% and has been awarded the prestigious Institute for Healthcare Improvement Award for Innovative Health Care Initiatives.
To sign up for the program ask your physician, therapist or nurse at Memorial Regional South.
