HIV Prevention Services

Memorial offers several programs, free, to all patients with the aim of the prevention of HIV.

HIV FOCUS Program

In partnership with Gilead, all Memorial Healthcare System adult emergency departments and Memorial Hospital Pembroke 24/7 Urgent Care Center offer free HIV testing to all patients who qualify and agree to the test. This program assists in linkage to Infectious Disease medical care, if needed.

FOCUS is a critical program for our region because Broward and Miami-Dade counties are continuously in the top three counties in the state for new HIV diagnoses.

Point of Care Rapid HIV Testing

Memorial offers free and confidential testing at several Memorial Primary Care facilities to any patient, regardless of insurance status, or if the patient has ever been to any Memorial healthcare facility. This testing is done on a walk-in basis, or while the patient is being seen by their primary care physician.

Patients will receive results within 15 minutes of the test being done. If any follow up is required, we ensure proper linkage to medical care.

PrEP Services

PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication used by people who are HIV negative and have a high risk of being exposed to HIV through sex or injection drug use.

If you have HIV, PrEP medicine is not for you.

Who should take PrEP?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you should consider PrEP if you:

  • are HIV negative,
  • have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months, and have
  • a sexual partner with HIV (especially if your partner has an unknown or detectable viral load), or
  • not consistently used a condom, or
  • been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the past 6 months.

PrEP is also recommended if you inject drugs and you:

  • have an injection partner with HIV, or
  • share needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs.

PrEP should also be considered for people without HIV who have been prescribed non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) and:

  • report continued risk behavior, or
  • have used multiple courses of PEP.

PEP Services

PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a medication that is taken by the patient to prevent HIV after possible exposure.

If you’ve been exposed to HIV, time is essential. PEP must be started within 72 hours after recent possible exposure to HIV.

If you have been prescribed PEP, you’ll need to take it continually for 28 days. Retesting after the 28 days is required to make sure that the PEP medication was effective.
