Soloway Mark MD 2013

The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) has honored Mark Soloway, MD, Chief of Urologic Oncology at Memorial Cancer Institute, with the association’s highest award for contributions to the field of Urology – The St. Paul’s Medal for 2015.

“The British Association of Urology has the entire world to choose from to select someone to receive this award. How can I not be exhilarated and yet humbled?” Dr. Soloway said. “I will share this with my family who often gave up a lot to allow me to spend the time needed for my research in addition to all the requirements of an active and full urologic surgery practice. I also share this with my trainees from all over the world who co-authored many of my publications.”

On June 17, Dr. Soloway, internationally recognized leader in urologic oncology, received the prestigious medal during the BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting held in Manchester, England. Created in 1989, the St. Paul’s Medal is awarded annually to distinguished colleagues from outside of the United Kingdom, who have made major contributions to the field of Urology, or to the BAUS association.

Among his contributions to the treatment of bladder, prostate and kidney cancer, Dr. Soloway has been associated with being instrumental in recognizing the benefit of chemotherapeutic drug, Cisplatin, for its anticancer activity in bladder cancer 40 years ago. It remains the most active treatment for advanced bladder cancer. He has also been instrumental in helping to define the role of placing drugs inside the bladder for the treatment of early stage bladder cancer to diminish the chance of a local recurrence. He has championed the role of active surveillance or forgoing aggressive treatment for low grade bladder and prostate cancer resulting in quality of life improvement for patients. He has also published over 530 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Soloway has twice been asked to chair the International Consultation on Urologic Diseases Recommendation Panel on Bladder Cancer (2004 and 2011), a committee charged with making recommendations on all aspects of bladder cancer. In May 2014, he became a recipient of the prestigious Willett Whitmore Jr. Memorial Lecture by the Society of Urologic Oncology.

Dr. Soloway, who joined the Memorial Cancer Institute and the Memorial Physician Group in 2014, leads a new division focused on the care of bladder, prostate and kidney cancers, as well as the research program. He regularly treats patients at Memorial Cancer Institute offices in Aventura and Boca Raton. Dr. Soloway also serves as a resource to other community urologists, providing second opinions regarding management and alternatives for the most common urologic cancers.

Dr. Soloway earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, and completed his residency in urology at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He completed his surgery branch fellowship at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. He served as professor and chairman at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Urology from 1991 until 2010.
