PGY3 Year

To enhance residents’ abilities to work in a variety of outpatient settings, residents spend a majority of their outpatient year at two different clinical sites:

Memorial Outpatient Behavioral Health Center (OBHC)

This brand new, 17,000 sq ft community behavioral health center houses several programs and wrap-around services. This is a grant funded site and any Broward County resident can obtain access to care regardless of insurance coverage. Residents will learn how to coordinate the care of complex patients with a multi-disciplinary group of on-site specialists including therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and peer support personnel.

Memorial Physician Group Outpatient Psychiatry Practice (MPG OPP)

This newly built outpatient office is designed to mimic a private practice model for residents where they will be working with patients 1-on-1, providing both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. PGY3 residents get their own designated office space which they can decorate to reflect their personal style (all essential furniture and wall art provided). Residents learn the skill sets necessary to manage a stand-alone office practice at this site.

PGY3 residents are provided with 1:1 supervision from an attending psychiatrist with each patient encounter at both sites ensuring adequate training and oversight.

In addition to time spent at both outpatient clinic locations, residents have one half day per week of the following:

• Esketamine/Long Acting Injectable Clinic: Residents learn to administer and monitor both long acting injectables and esketamine to patients referred from the community and our own clinical services at this site.
• Scholarly Activity: All PGY3 residents have one half-day of protected time for scholarly activity.
• Psychotherapy: All PGY3 residents have one half-day of protected time for psychotherapy clients.

PGY4 Year

Residents maintain a half-day continuity clinic at both OBHC and MPG OPP and are required to complete 3 months of each:

• Inpatient Psychiatry
• Consultation Liaison Psychiatry

The remaining 6 months are allotted to elective opportunities including but not limited to:

• Palliative Care
• Forensic Psychiatry
• Research
• Training to be a Clinician Educator
• Child Psychiatry
• Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
• Translational Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Weekend Rounds

Residents perform weekend rounds on the adult inpatient psychiatric units and cover consult services under direct supervision of an attending psychiatrist.

Weekend rounds frequency:

• PGY1 year: 5 weekends/year
• PGY2 year: 5 weekends/year
• PGY2 residents also round 1 weekend/month while on the child psychiatry service.
• PGY3 year: 3 weekends/year
• PGY4 year: 1 weekend/year

Overnight Phone Coverage

Residents provide at home overnight phone coverage for new admissions from 5 pm to 7 am.

Overnight phone coverage frequency for each resident (PGY1 - PGY4) is 13 nights per year, averaging to one night every 30 days.

The didactic curriculum consists of several topics that span the PGY1 and PGY2 (junior) curriculum with more advanced topics being introduced in the PGY3 and PGY4 (senior) curriculum. Learning sessions consist of small group discussion, lectures, interactive workshops, and case based learning. Up to date resources are utilized so residents are taught the most current evidence based guidelines.

PGY1 and 2 residents have a half day of protected didactic time on Thursday afternoons.

PGY3 and 4 residents have a half day of protected time on Tuesday afternoons.

PGY3 and 4 residents also participate in weekly one-hour group psychotherapy supervision with our director of psychology, Dr. Marcy Smith. This allows residents to review psychotherapy cases with one another, obtain feedback, and reflect on the therapeutic relationship.
